janak

king janak after the marriage of his daughter requested his sons in law to stay for some time in mithila...lord rama and lakshmanji gracefully accepted the invitation ... lord rama was quite happy with the stay but lakshmana mind was at unrest he had heard lot about king janak he knew tht king janak was depreive of wordly desire he was actually looking forward to experience the austere life of a monk a sage... instead wht he was looking a palace full of luxuries...wen lakshmanji looked at the luxury he questioned himself "why father in law of mine known throughout the land as sage living amid same riches as any other king how can he be consider himself as saint ???"
lakshman had no answers to these questions and it continously bothered him over the following days as king janak entertained the handsome princes with all royal pleasures...one day king janak was sitting on his golden throne he greeted lakshman and asked "have u seen my kingdom my palace did u liked it????"

lakshman replied back "indeed i have its the most stupendous palace i have ever seen and it lefts me in utter bewilderment tht a sage also needs royal comfort and luxuries?"

king janak understood the situation he smiled and said "did u saw all parts of my palace i  m sure u havent let me take u to the tour again"

lakshman ji  reluctantly agreed

then king janak handed him a cup brimming with coconut oil and asked "would u carry this for me while we walk through the palace"

"ofcourse" lakshman replied though it seemed strange request

"it is extremely important tht u dont spill even a single drop  now follow me" said king janak
nervously lakshmanji held the cup with both hands and did the best to follow king...the oil quivered on the lip of the cup the slightest jarring and it would spill The king took him to the royal garden around the pool of lotus blossoms but lakshman eyes were fixed on the cup as his feet carefully felt each step...they crossed the royal kitchen and the air was filled with aroma of cardomom cloves and different spices  but lakshman might as well have become noseless..king janak showed him the expensive and rare artifacts brought from the seven worlds but lakshman didnt noticed it at all
at last the tour ended and king janak asked "so lakshmana i have showed u my entire palace and now tell me what was the most delightful thing u encountered in my palace???"

"to be honest" said laskhmana "i was concentrated so deep on the cup of the oil tht i really didnt noticed anything i m so sorry...".

king janak smiled and said "dont be this is how i live in my palace all the time the cup of oil is  present in my palm and i m always careful not to spill it... the cup is my life and the oil is the divine love for my lord and i always concentrated on the divine love the cup is all i can afford to dwell on weather i live in palace or i love in monastery..."
laskhman eyes glistered with understanding and king janak embraced him...king janak gave a greatest teachig to lakshman to attain undiverted mind on supreme being...
